God’s cure for anxiety

Have you ever struggled with Anxiety?  Learn 3 Truths from God about anxiety and how to deal with it.

The world today is full of anxiety.  Everywhere you turn there is pressure always mounting and people are suffering from anxiety more than every before.  Here is Matthew 6 we are looking at the only recorded message of Christ.  He is talking to the disciples about the subject of anxiety.  He says take no thought for your life.  The word, thought, means anxious care or fretting about life’s basic needs.  Anxiety is a common problem for everyone and in these verses our Lord shows us the condemnation of anxiety and the cure for anxiety.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?  Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?  And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:  And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?  Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

The Condemnation

We learn 3 truths about the condemnation of Anxiety.

  1. The Composition of Life – v. 25
You need to ponder this thought, “How shall I live?” If the Lord was living today, how would He live?  Remember He is speaking to the disciples.
  2. The Care of God to all life – v. 26-28
God is saying He can take care of the fowls (v.26) and the flowers (v.28), then He can care for us. Verse 26 is not to make man lazy but instead to show us God’s detail care.  Verse 28 is there to show us the extent and excellence of God’s care.
  3. The Character of Anxiety
God is teaching us it is futile to worry. He gives the example of a man wanting to be taller, all the worry in the world can not make this take place.

The Cure

Christ gives us one cure to the problem of anxiety

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33

The cure for anxiety is seeking after God instead of seeking after man.

  1. The Earnestness and Effort – Seek
The word seek means to strive after, it means to stretch yourself after the result. It is not a casual act but an all-consuming search.
  2. The Earliness – Seek First
Too often in life God is not first. Anxiety can be cured when God comes before anything else.
  3. Two Entities
    1. Rule of God – does God rule in your life?
    2. Righteousness of God – do you live according to God’s Word?

Holiness and consecration are a road to healthy living.

  4. The Endowment
Verse 34 teaches us that when we seek God first, then God will make sure all other things are taken care of in life.
